I completed my Ph.D. in physiology at the Université de Montréal in (under the supervision of François Péronnet) where I investigated human metabolism using calorimetry and stable isotope metabolic tracers. After a complementary training in cellular bioenergetics at the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble (under the supervision of Prof Xavier Leverve), I completed my post-doctoral fellowship in comparative biochemistry at the University of British-Columbia under the guidance of Dr. Peter Hochachka, where I began to develop a strong interest for mitochondrial bioenergetics and the regulation of cellular energy exchange.

In 2003 I established myself  at the Université de Montréal where I developed a mitochondrial physiology laboratory. The central interest of my laboratory has been to integrate multiple facets of mitochondrial biology to gain a global understanding of the importance of these organelles in physiological homeostasis, and development of human diseases, including acquired cardiac and skeletal muscle pathologies as well as genetic mitochondrial diseases. We have developed an expertise in the assessment of multiple mitochondrial functions and quality control mechanisms, which have been used not only in basic studies using animal models, but also in tissues from patients in the context of translational research. In 2016, I moved my laboratory to the University of Ottawa, where I integrated a dynamic research environment that will allow us to pursue our basic research program and expand our translational activities.

Over the years, I got the opportunity to supervize several talented and motivated trainees who played a central role in the success of my laboratory. I take great pride in the fact that many of them now  occupy enviable positions in academia or the pharmaceutical industry.   Togh
